As a Network Administrator, you will serve as the hands-on network expert for the United States Geological Survey (USGS), ensuring its physical and virtual networks run securely, efficiently, and reliably. USGS depends on these networks to manage and share massive amounts of geographic and scientific data that support national priorities in environmental protection, disaster response, and infrastructure planning.
In this role, you will handle network tasks such as installation, configuration, and updating of network hardware and software-defined networking, DNS registrations, IP and VLAN assignments, inter-VLAN routing, and providing wireless access while ensuring overall network performance and reliability. You will monitor network uptime, review and request firewall updates, troubleshoot issues using packet capture and analysis tools, maintain network device configuration backups, and test recovery plans. Your expertise in routing protocols, TCP/IP services, and network monitoring will be critical to keeping USGS’s data highways secure and operating smoothly.

Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline with at least at least 2 years of relevant experience
- Or a current equivalent IT professional certification with at least 2 years of relevant experience
- Or at least 6 years of relevant experience in lieu of degree
- Demonstrated knowledge of Cisco IOS to configure, maintain, and troubleshoot network devices and ensure smooth network operations
- Familiarity with Windows networking components to support secure, high-performing network environments across diverse systems
- Familiarity with Linux networking components to manage and optimize multi-platform network infrastructure efficiently
- Familiarity with virtual networking components to support flexible and scalable network environments
- Proficiency of network protocols and TCP/IP services to ensure reliable data flow, routing, and overall network stability
- Solid understanding of physical datacenter network devices to design, implement, and maintain robust, mission-critical network systems
- Industry certifications such as CCNA, Network+ or Security+ to demonstrate advanced networking expertise and best practices
- Vendor-specific network certifications (e.g., Aruba, SonicWALL, Fortinet etc.) to demonstrate an understanding of network components
