Toponymy Analyst - Geographic Names and Mapping
Location: Reston, VA (Hybrid Remote)
Salary: $63,000
At The United States Geological Survey (USGS), names are more than labels on a map—they reflect the cultural, historical, and geographic narratives of our nation.
As a Geographic Research Analyst, you’ll help guide the formal naming process for geographic features across the United States, ensuring proposals are evaluated fairly, documented thoroughly, and reviewed with sensitivity to community input and historical context.
In this role, you’ll review naming proposals while conducting historical and geospatial research and preparing case materials, such as research briefs, stakeholder summaries and jurisdictional maps that inform official decisions. Using tools like ArcGIS Pro, Google Earth, and federal map datasets, you’ll assess spatial data, identify jurisdictional overlaps, and provide clear, policy-aligned documentation. Your work helps ensure every naming decision is grounded in accuracy, transparency, and respect.
This isn’t a passive research role—it’s a dynamic position requiring diplomacy, precision, and the ability to navigate sensitive intergovernmental issues with neutrality. If you have a passion for maps, history, and public service, this role offers the chance to make a lasting impact—literally!
